Interior Designing & Oriental Rugs

If we take a moment to reflect on the history of interior decorating and architectural design, we’ll find that Oriental Rugs have been focal points since the beginning. In fact, they’ve been prized in Western interiors since the 1500s. It’s easy to understand why they’ve always enjoyed such widespread popularity – Oriental Rugs can make any room look beautiful. And if that benefit wasn’t quite enough, they last for decades and they are extremely easy to care for.

When it comes to designing the interior of your home, you don’t need to be an expert. You simply need to be willing to spend some time thinking about what you want your room to look like after all of your efforts are complete.

How is the room laid out, or how do you want it to be laid out?

If you want your room to be one large space with the activity mostly focused in the center, one large rug might be your best option. On the other hand, if you’re looking to break your room up into smaller spaces that each have their own function, you might consider shopping for a few smaller rugs that delineate these spaces. For example, if your living room has a couch and a couple of love seats, perhaps you will put a rug behind the couch underneath a table and another in the space that all of your seating is centered around.

Expose yourself to variety.

Choosing an Oriental Rug or several rugs for even just one room can be difficult if you aren’t familiar with all of the options that are available to you. Shopping online is a great place to start. However, it’s also a good idea to visit some rug showrooms so that you can see the rugs in person and feel their materials. Visiting a showroom also gives you the option to bring the rug home and see how you like it when you place it in the room that you’re decorating. This might make you realize that you should be looking for brighter colors, or perhaps you need a different size.

Determine (approximately) how big your rug should be.

When you’re putting an area rug in any space, you will most likely want to leave at least a small amount of space as a border. For instance, if the space that you’re putting your rug in is 12 by 16 feet, you will likely look for a rug that is 9 by 12 feet so that you have a nice border peaking out from underneath. Once you determine an approximate size that you’d like your rug to be, the selection process becomes a lot easier.

What color will look great in your room?

It’s critical that you like how all of the colors in your room look together. There are several elements to consider, from the colors of your walls, to the colors in your furniture, to the color of your floor. Make sure that you determine what kinds of colors you think would go well with all of these elements. It’s a good idea to bring your rug or rugs home to see how you like them against all of the colors that you have already introduced into the room. Keep in mind that dark colors trick the eye into thinking that the ceiling is lower, and light colors can make the ceiling appear higher.

What type of design do you like?

Because Oriental Rugs have been around for thousands of years, it makes sense that there are thousands of designs, too. However, to make it easier, we can group these designs into more manageable categories. You’ll come across rugs that have geometric figures and straight lines. Some have curvilinear lines that might seem more formal and ornate. Others display contemporary designs that can be abstract and/or display fewer colors.

No matter what room you’re decorating, and no matter what your doubts and concerns may be, the experts at David Tiftickjian & Sons are always here to help you navigate the exciting selection process.
