April is Earth Month so as we celebrate our planet, let’s look at some renewable flooring options for the eco-warrior or environmentally conscious consumer.
Renewable flooring is any flooring option that is made from sustainable materials or is sourced from recycled content, reducing environmental impact.
Hardwood is an obvious choice because wood is a natural resource with a long lifespan that requires minimal processing. Many hardwood dealers harvest from responsibly managed tree farms or forests, and strive to reduce waste during production.
Bamboo or Cork flooring are hardwood alternatives, the former harder, the latter softer, which can also be FSC-certified. Bamboos grows quickly and abundantly while cork bark regrows every three years.
Rugs or carpet made of wool can be viewed as renewable because wool is a highly renewable, natural, and sustainable fiber that is long-lasting, but will degrade over time once it’s lifespan has ended.
Although not technically renewable, there are also rugs and carpet made from recycled plastic which reduces landfill impact while still providing a floor cover that’s durable, beautiful, and soft to the touch.
